Our generation has disappointed me yet again.
#WhyDoBlackPeople get racist slurs thrown at them in this day and age?
This hashtag was trending on Wednesday night. I usually ignore trending topics, but this one was so ridiculous that I decided to go see what people were saying. The results were disgusting.
As you might expect, the feed was filled with stereotypical comments. Some of the tweets even came from the race the trending topic was targeting, but those were joking and clearly not serious at all. As I dug deeper, I found that some people were outright saying they hated people of color. What had started as a joke, albeit a tasteless and inconsiderate one, had turned into a festering pit of racism.
Yeah, I’m a middle-class white chick. I don’t personally know everything someone from a minority race has to deal with, but I know unacceptable things when I see them. I’m usually fine with jokes about “typical white girl problems,” but those are all in good fun. It is absolutely ridiculous that the racist mindset of some of our ancestors is still continuing in our generation. This is the 21st century, not the 20th…or the 19th.
This is my very own chunk of the internet in which I can showcase my thoughts. I have a penchant for over-thinking everything, which can lead to analysis that would have otherwise never come to light. However, most of the time I get fired up over things that most people would consider trivial, even negligible. Sitting around and stewing over issues can turn into a complete and utter mess, so I've turned to writing. You can expect anything from reactions to social issues to criticism of annoying fads to glimpses into the aspects of everyday life that might be overlooked.
