As the 2016 cross country season approaches, senior leaders aim to push Northwest to new limits. After nearly missing state last year, the Huskies lost five runners heading into this season. However, the team has nine of the fourteen varsity runners returning and Head Coach Matt LeCount hopes they can use this experience to their advantage.

“On the boys’ side I’ve got four of the seven returning and on the girls’ side I’ve got five of the seven returning,” LeCount said. “So hopefully we can build off that this year.”

Runners on the team are also setting high standards for this season. Senior Alexis Sroor said she hopes this will be the year in which the whole team makes it to state.

“[Our expectations are] for a lot of us to get under 20 [minutes in the 5K] and hopefully for the whole team to make it to state, not just one or two individual qualifiers” Sroor said.

Senior Tejas Mahabaleshwarkar also said he hopes the team can have success at state and feels that the team chemistry will lead them towards their goal.

“We’re really close and we always have the greatest conversations when we’re on our runs for practice; everyday [our team chemistry] gets stronger,” Mahabaleshwarkar said.
