Fight Breaks Out In Commons

Gabby Gasser

A fight that began in the BVNW Commons this morning ended with a male student in handcuffs in the school’s main parking lot, according to witnesses.

Senior Max Creason said he witnessed two male students get into a fight in the Commons. Creason said they were in an argument, when the first student started pushing on the second student who appeared not to want to physically fight back.

At least one administrator witnessed these events and attempted to break up the argument. According to Creason, the second student told the first student he did not want to fight him and that is when the first student began kicking and punching the other student.

During this time, according to Creason, associate principal Steve Harms intervened. The first student threw the other student’s backpack, and the second student became angry and attempted to chase after the first student. Harms stopped the second student and sent him to the office.

According to Creason, he heard the first student make threats to Harms and the other student before he ran out of the building.

Two police cars, a fire truck and an ambulance were dispatched to BVNW. A witness said she saw a male student tackled in the parking lot by one police officer. It ended with two police officers pinning the male student down and cuffing him.

Administrators declined to answer questions concerning the morning incident saying it was a student matter and they could not comment.

Principal Amy Murphy did, however, send the following email to parents and faculty following the incident:

“Earlier today, a situation occurred here at BVNW that required law enforcement assistance to the campus around drop off time. Two students were involved in an altercation with one another with was addressed by school personnel and law enforcement authorities. At no time were students at BVNW in danger, and we appreciate their cooperation in this incident. We look forward to completing a great school day here at BVNW. I wanted to make you aware of this incident and let you know why you may have seen emergency vehicles on campus today.”
