The varsity football team lost to Blue Valley High in the Senior Night game Friday Oct. 14, 7-42. Senior wide receiver Riley Zerni scored the only touchdown of the game for the Huskies, a 26 yard touchdown reception from sophomore quarterback Jacob Clark with 5:33 remaining in the first quarter.

Prior to the game, the team held a ceremony honoring 11 senior players- Zerni, Thomas Prince, Daeron Robinson, Chris Whitter, Willy Pegues, Hunter Rahto, Bhokore Wassira, Garret Tierney, Kevin Hunt, Jackson Forbes and Soye Olowu- for their contributions to the program.

Head coach Mike Zegunis said despite the frustrations of a loss to an undefeated Blue Valley team, he was proud of the effort put forth from the seniors on the team.

“I never ever questioned our guys fight, they fight all the time and they don’t ever give up,” Zegunis said.

Zerni said it was special to be able to score in the final home game of his career and although the loss was frustrating, the support of the fans was encouraging for the players.

“It was kinda special to be the only senior who scored on Senior Night,” Zerni said. “It’s a good feeling playing here with this crowd.”

If adjustments are not made heading towards the end of the season, Zegunis said the season will end much earlier than expected.

“We’re at a point now where it’s getting pretty desperate,” Zegunis said. “You’ve got to make those improvements so you can keep playing, and if you don’t then your season ends up over faster than you want it to be over.”

With the loss BVNW falls to 2-5 for the 2016 season. The Huskies travel to Manhattan Oct. 21 to take on Manhattan High School in the final game of the 2016 regular season.
