BVNW boys soccer hosted the regional semi-finals  at 6:00 in the DAC tonight against Olathe North. BVNW took the victory, 5-0.

Head coach Rick Pribyl said although the team started off poorly, they were able to quickly recover and take control.

Senior Colton Southwell scored the first goal of the night, three minutes into the game. Junior Austin Flores followed with the last goal of the half twenty minutes later. At halftime, BVNW had the lead, 2-0.

“We were flat-footed during the first half,” Pribyl said. “But in the second half, we played true BVNW soccer.”

Two minutes into the second half, senior Sam Taylor scored, bringing the Huskies to a 3-0 lead. With 15 minutes left to play, junior Trevor Kerns added his own goal, and senior Dean Mohammadi followed suit with the final goal of the game with a minute to go. Junior Sam Glass recorded a shutout, and the Huskies came away with a 5-0 win.

Even with the good performance, Pribyl said the team will have to continue to work hard and practice.

“We want to get better overall in every game,” Pribyl said. “This kind of performance just isn’t good enough for [the finals], and [our opponents] are very good teams.”

Southwell agreed with Pribyl regarding the poor play at the beginning of the game, but believes the team pulled it together during the second half.

“We didn’t keep the ball on the ground,” Southwell said. “That’s definitely the biggest thing we need to focus on, as well as talking to each other.”

Though the team came away with a win, Pribyl and Southwell agree that they will be practicing intensely for the finals, which will take place on Thursday, Oct. 31 at the DAC, against Blue Valley West.

“We’re just going to keep doing what we do,” Pribyl said. “We’ll practice our skill level and teamwork by practicing.”
