Stop judging single mothers, you dimwits

Parents are parents, no matter the number or gender.

“Single moms are bad for society,” “single mothers are not heroes, they are idiots,” “single moms are the root of all evil,” “single dads are hot.” Thank you, Google and Bing.

These search engines are simply suggesting the most-searched phrases, which concerns me. Especially since Bing has a plethora of negative phrases for single mothers, yet only two (hot and better parents) for single fathers. This is screwed up.

I’m not attacking these companies; I’m criticizing society – this is what we search for, what we put on the web, what we say. What makes single mothers any different from single fathers? If anything, we should be saying that single mothers are better, considering they’re the ones who birthed the child and are stereotypically the caregiver in most marriages.

When you see the exhausted woman with a six-month-old on her hip buying Cheerios and orange juice at the grocery store using WIC, that’s all you see – you don’t know her story. You don’t know how she ended up in her situation, nor do you know how much effort she puts in on a day-to-day basis. And that man with “sexy” scruff toting a toddler while he browses the clearance section? Nothing makes him a more suitable parent than the single mother. Stop and think for a second. How would you feel if you were in their shoes?
