You Ask, We Answer: A dateless Homecoming?

Homecoming is fun, but if you don’t have a date, it can get uncomfortable.

You Ask, We Answer

Your anonymous question:

I’m a freshman and I haven’t been asked to Homecoming, so I was wondering if it’s ok to go with a group of friends?

Answer:

Dear freshman,

Sure, you can go to homecoming with a group of friends. There are tons of solo freshman there ready to mingle. On certain occasions, it can be even more fun going with friends because the drama is usually minimal with your besties. But don’t feel like you are obligated to go to Homecoming simply because other people are going. There’s no need to jump on the bandwagon. But, definitely plan on going in a group with only other people who haven’t asked, because let’s face it – it would be horrendous to be the only solo person in a group where everyone else has a date.

Most people can agree that the best parts about Homecoming are usually the dinner and the after party. The actual dance itself can get a bit mundane and congested. If you actually do end up going solo, then take some precautionary measures about the dance. It can get awkward! You might not think of it at first, but just wait until they play the first slow song. Soon everyone will be paired up dancing to some bubbly melodious tune, and you will have to oddly step off to the side or “go to the bathroom” – unless you can team up with another solo. That’s not the worst of it. There will be people who choose to make out for the entire time there in the back corner. I don’t understand why you would pay $15 to do that kind of shenanigans on a plastic chair. Anyways, I’m getting off topic…

During my freshman year, I went to Homecoming in a group of friends. I can recall that the dinner and the after party were a lot of fun, but the dance itself was not. Whether you go or not is entirely up to you and your friends, but remember it can get awkward. Maybe you could substitute the dance with a movie? Decisions. Decisions. Decisions.
