Girls Tennis
Despite the majority of the girl’s tennis team having graduated last year, head coach Jared Fluis is setting his expectations high to win regionals again and go on to play in State.
“Our goals are to hopefully qualify all six [players] for state this year depending on our regionals. Getting back to State, our number one singles player finished runner-up last year, so ultimately I’d like to see her get back into that spot this year,” Fluis said “We have some incoming freshmen that are going to be strong so the goal is to get them up near the top six so that they’re competing with those players.”
While none of the team had summer conditioning together because of the cost to rent a court, many players have been preparing for the season this summer to get their minds and bodies prepared for the upcoming season. Captain Emily Chaisson has worked in various ways throughout the off-season to come back ready to play.
“This summer we had afternoon practice with me and Megan leading it, and then personally I’ve been playing every day at Genesis this summer,” Chaisson said.
The team will hopefully overcome last season’s adversities by not only having Fluis back after an injury, but also having a new assistant coach that has been a great addition to the team according to Fluis.
“She comes from New York playing D1 tennis, tons of experience coaching youth so she’s been great,” Fluis said. “She can get out there and be involved with feeding balls, hitting with the players and she’s already developed relationships with the girls in her first week.”
With the team’s eyes set on getting to spend quality time together, they are happy to be back together, along with being able to spend their time together throughout this fall season according to both Chiasson and Fluis.
“We love developing relationships. We have all of our team dinners and get-togethers. It’s just a lot of fun to see everybody grow, come together and enjoy themselves, that’s what we strive for,” Fluis said.
Although the team will not be fully reunited until after Labor Day when club tournaments end, their first match can be watched at the Woodside Tennis Courts against Bishop Miege on Aug. 31.
