After a school record finish at the 6A state tournament that saw the varsity cross country team finish with their highest combined placing in school history, the team looks to improve upon their success. After losing five out of the top seven boys’ runners that placed ninth at state, head coach Matt LeCount is confident the runners this year will be up to the task.

“We are replacing five out of the top seven on that squad [due] to graduation,” LeCount said. “But, we have several athletes who have been putting in a lot of hard work over the summer, who are ready to step into those roles.”

Personally placing 1st at regionals and 13th at state, junior Riley Beach hopes to recover from an injury and win the 6A state championship this year, while also improving her leadership.

“Since I’m coming off an injury, I’m just trying to get back to where I was last year and hopefully win state this year,” Beach said. “I want to be able to lead the team a little bit more vocally than I did last year, now that I’m an upperclassman.”

Losing only one girl runner that was part of the state team that placed fifth, Beach said she’s excited to see how the team can improve upon its performance last year.

“After a successful last season, we’re all feeling pretty motivated,” Beach said. “There have been a lot of changes in the environment of the program, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how we can improve upon our performance last year.”
