With the BVNW wrestling season kicking off on Friday Dec. 2 with the Southwest Shootout in Rio Rancho, N.M. the young team is looking to start the season off strong. According to head coach Tim Serbousek the team is led by a small group of established varsity wrestlers including senior Garret Tierney. Tierney said to help his younger teammates mature he has to take time to help shape them for their futures.
“I have to be a positive influence on them,” Tierney said. “I have to go around and hopefully get to know them really well… and lead them in the right direction.”
Tierney said one of the sources of their success over the past few years is the tireless efforts from their coaching staff.
“I think [the team’s] biggest strength honestly comes from our coaches,” Tierney said. “I think [Serbousek] is the best wrestling coach in Kansas; he’ll get us ready regardless of the wrestlers we have.”
Serbousek said that while the team may be younger than past seasons, expectations remain the same.
“We have a young group… so it’s going to be a learning curve for a while,” Serbousek said. “But, expectations are same as always, get better each day and win.”
