The BVNW boys varsity soccer team kicked off their 2012 season with a win against Blue Valley North with a final score of 2-1, Aug. 24. After celebrating Husky Night with former BVNW principal, Dr. Russ Kokoruda, both BVNW fans attended the first game the Huskies played as visitor.

Senior captain Paul Fletcher scored both of the Huskies’ two goals of the night, first tying up the game 1-1 with 10 minutes left in the first half. Midway through the second half, Fletcher scored another goal, pulling ahead 2-1 which the team maintained, ending in victory.  Fletcher said he attributes his successful shots not to his own ability, but to the help of his teammates.

“It wasn’t just me [scoring goals], it was all the other guys playing me the ball,” Fletcher said. “I just got lucky going on the end.”

Looking toward the upcoming Fat Cat tournament and the rest of the season, Fletcher said the team still needs to focus on getting in shape. As for their first game, he said the team is excited about their win and are looking forward to a promising season.

“[We feel] awesome,” Fletcher said. “It’s the first time we’ve beat North probably in 5 years on our first game, so it feels great.”
