The boys’ varsity soccer team took on Blue Valley North in their first game of the season, Aug. 27. Team captain and senior Andrew Mitchell said the team had been looking forward to the game for a while and playing in front of fans made it even better.
“We were excited. We got to see all of the fans. We tried to play our heart out,” Mitchell said.
Head coach Brian Pollack said he had concerns going into the game due to the team being restricted in practice this week because of the heat.
“[The team had] limited practice and the heat has exacerbated that,” Pollack said.
Less than four minutes into the game, the Mustangs scored a goal. The Huskies trailed the Mustangs, 1-0, and the score remained for the entirety of the first half. Pollack said he encouraged the team to take advantage of opportunities through his halftime speech.
“Our halftime talk was really about adjustments. [The players] were sitting back and we needed to adjust,” Pollack said.
Thirty seconds into the second half, the Mustangs scored a second goal and the Huskies now trailed the Mustangs, 2-0. A minute later, junior Sam McIntosh scored a goal bringing the score to 2-1.
Later, BVN scored another goal, increasing their lead to 3-1. With 18:27 left in the second half, junior Gustavo Silva scored another goal shrinking the deficit to 3-2. The game finished without any more goals. Mitchell said he was upset with the results.
“This has been one of the worst games I’ve ever been a part of,” Mitchell said.
Despite being disappointed in the score, Mitchell said he believes there is room for growth.
“We can only go up from here,” Mitchell said.
Pollack agreed with Mitchell and said he is proud of the team’s mindset.
“Obviously there’s disappointment with the score and losing, but it was a heck of a game,” Pollack said. “I saw passion on the field which I want to continue. I saw a team that played as a team, hopefully, that continues.”
