Going into the game, senior Jack Chapman said their team focused on winning, as this would allow the team to make yet another run at winning the 6A state championship.

“We wanted to make sure we [won],” Chapman said. “It is a tradition here to go to state every year so we just wanted to handle our business and move on.”

The Olathe South Falcons managed to stay in the game with the Northwest Huskies, trailing by five points at the end of the first quarter and 11 points to finish off the first half.

Nonetheless, Northwest came out strong to start the second half, only allowing South to score 11 points in the third quarter. During halftime, Chapman said Head Coach Ed Fritz encouraged his players to attack on offense.

“[Fritz] wanted us to stay aggressive and push the ball up the floor,” Chapman said. “We broke the lead open and were able to blow them out.”

At the end of the third quarter, the Huskies had scored 25 points, making their lead 61-36. Northwest would go on to win the game 74-46. Senior Alston Mason scored 28 points for the Huskies while Chapman scored 21.

Looking on to their next game, Fritz said by playing Lawrence once already this season he is aware of few key players they will face.

“They have a really good player and a really good shooter,” Fritz said.

Chapman added onto Fritz and said they will prepare to face Lawerence with the end goal of making it to the state championship.

“We are going to get our game plan down, play with confidence and get ready to go to another state championship,” Chapman said.

Northwest will host Lawrence in the next round of state playoffs on Monday, March 8.
