After a quiet first half at Monday night’s game, Shawnee Mission West came out firing on BVNW’s Senior Night Monday, April 30.
Within the first three minutes of the second half, Shawnee Mission West scored a goal giving them a 1-0 lead.
However the Huskies answered as senior Lily Reid tied up the game with a low corner shot assisted by senior Livia Lambrecht to tie the game at 1-1. Reid said scoring on Senior Night was a great way to finish the season and was glad she could share it will all the seniors.
“I was just really happy to at least finish on senior night and be there with all my fellow seniors and celebrate,” Reid said.
While Reid’s equalizer put BVNW back in the game, Shawnee Mission West tacked on two more goals in the second half to solidify a Vikings’ victory.
The Huskies were not able to capitalize on their opportunities in the first half and fell to some unlucky goals in the second leading to a 3-1 loss on senior night. Senior Averie Howard said they weren’t creating enough chances throughout the second half to finish on.
“We put away one chance and we just started to drop off,” Howard said. “We didn’t keep our chances coming.”
During halftime Howard, a four-year varsity player, and her fellow seniors were recognized. Howard said she remembers being at Senior Night as a freshman and didn’t expect her senior night to come so fast.
“I remember being a freshman like it was yesterday and watching Senior Night was like the biggest deal,” Howard said. “It’s true when they say Senior Night comes so fast, it really does.”
Both Howard and Reid are going to miss the team and the relationships they have with the players, but they get to share this moment with Assistant Head Coach Brian Murphy.
“It’s crazy to think how we’re going out with Murphy too,” Reid said. “It’s so special to share that with him.”
