Late in their Senior Night game against the undefeated Blue Valley Southwest Timberwolves, BVNW was in attack mode as they needed to score to give themselves a chance. For the vast majority of the game, the Huskies had difficulties finishing on offensive opportunities. It was not until the final minutes of the game when they were finally able to convert.
Junior Kyle Pellen juked his way around a BVSW defender and was able to cross the ball to senior captain Blake Perott in the middle of the field.
“I saw… one guy coming into my left,” Perott said. “I knew that I only had to get around him to get an open shot.”
As Perott possessed the ball far outside of the penalty box, he was able to beat the BVSW defender and lasered a shot into the back of the net with 4:24 remaining in the game for the Huskies first goal of the night, which brought the Huskies to within one goal.
Trailing the Timberwolves, 2-1, BVNW mustered up all of their energy to get another goal. The Huskies had a great chance in the final seconds on a corner kick which multiple BVNW players got a foot on, but ultimately wasted another opportunity when the ball found the hands of BVSW’s goalie.
After squandering numerous chances, the Huskies late run proved to be unsuccesful as they fell to the undefeated Timberwolves, 2-1.
Prior to the Huskies bid late in the game, the offense of the Timberwolves proved to be too much to handle at times. Despite having many saves on the night, senior goalie Neil Schell and the BVNW defense was unable to stop a free kick from BVSW with 20:42 left in the first half as the ball deflected off of Schell and found its way into the bottom corner of the net. This goal by the Timberwolves gave them a 1-0 lead over the Huskies going into halftime.
Coming out of the break, BVSW was quick to attack as they scored their second goal of the night when forward Luke Rafanan of the Timberwolves finessed his way around a BVNW defender and scored what would prove to be the deciding goal, extending their lead to 2-0.
With a loss on their last home game of the regular season, Schell said offensively the Huskies played solid, but needed to finish.
“Our offense has been really strong lately,” Schell said. “We’re moving the ball around and we’re getting the ball all the way across into the box and getting in some deadly positions.”
Going into regionals, Perott said he is optimistic about how the Huskies have been playing.
“We’re playing our best soccer right now,” Perott said.
On their senior night, the eight seniors all started the game and were recognized at halftime. Despite the valiant effort of these players, the Huskies were unable to give BVSW their first loss of the season. The Huskies next game will be the first game of regionals, to be announced.
