BVNW Beats SMS At Home Game

The girls varsity basketball team beat Shawnee Mission South (SMS) at a home game on Dec 8.

At the end of the first quarter, BVNW had a strong lead with a score of 17-8.

BVNW kept the lead at halftime, with a score of 26-19. Around this quarter is when head coach David Glenn said the team slowed down like they usually end up doing, but he said they managed to change things around this time.

“We got off to a really good start and then we kind of made some errors and silly mistakes towards the middle of the game,” Glenn said. “But then we tightened that up after halftime and made some adjustments and it was pretty good.”

The lead was maintained by BVNW even at the end of third quarter, with a score of 37-26.

The game ended when BVNW defeated SMS with a final score of 45-38. Glenn said he thought the game went well.

“Our previous home game, we got off to a pretty good start, and then we had that lull and did not come back from it,” Glenn said. “So, the difference with this one is that we got off to a good start, had that slow spot in the middle of the game, but were able to maintain the lead and continue to bounce back so that was good.”

Senior Lauren Coady, no. 22, said she thought the team did best on pressuring SMS’s defense and stealing, but she still thinks there is room for improvement.

“We definitely need to work on handling the ball with pressure against a full court press,” Coady said. “We also need to work on cutting hard to the basket on offense.”
