Hepburn, Grant and a Leopard

When a paleontologist and socialite adopt a “tame” leopard, adventure ensues in the quirky screwball comedy, “Bringing Up Baby”

My sister and I are thoroughly obsessed with Katharine Hepburn.  In my mind, her name is synonymous with the 1940’s, New England elegance, and an independent woman.   One of my favorite movies of hers is undoubtedly “Bringing Up Baby.”  It is a witty romantic comedy about a zany socialite, a paleontologist and a rather out-of-place leopard.

An impressionable paleontologist (Cary Grant), is engaged to his controlling curator partner, who has just discovered the last bone to a Brontosaurus skeleton.  While trying to gain a sponsor for the museum, Grant meets a hair-brained socialite (Katharine Hepburn), who refuses to leave him alone.  The two are continuously brought together over the course of a day and eventually set off on a series of misadventures after Hepburn tries to re-gift a leopard to the horrified Grant. The movie is definitely quirky.  However, it is a thoroughly funny and heart-warming film.

Hepburn has a unique talent of bringing life to a film.  Playing a variety of roles throughout her career (often frequenting the stage in her later life), Hepburn never ceased to play the liberated woman.  She becomes the character with ease, and makes you thoroughly believe in her talents as an actress.  Hepburn also commonly starred with Cary Grant, most often in romantic comedies.  As two of the most famous actors of the 1930s and 1940s, they are truly multi-talented and their chemistry is brilliant together on screen.
