The boys varsity basketball team defeated BVW 71-36. Before the game, the senior team members were honored with their family and friends for their senior night.
“We definitely wanted to enjoy the Senior Night,” senior Ben Richardson said. “We enjoyed the moment and thinking about far we have come.”
The first half of the game was relatively slow. At the end of the first quarter, BVNW led BVW by only one point, 15-14. However, they started to pick up their pace and increase their lead to 31-21 by halftime. According to head coach Ed Fritz, the team did not do as well as they could have in the first half because they were caught up in the emotion of the night.
“First quarter, I thought we came out and didn’t guard very well,” Fritz said. “I thought [BVW] was able to get some back door cuts on us. Second quarter, we started wearing them down a little bit.”
Halftime was characterized by honoring the senior cheerleaders and a performance from the Dazzler Dance Team. Fritz said the team did a much better job during the second half of the game because they were able to get refocused. At the end of the third quarter, the huskies lead BVW 57-29. The team defeated BVW 71-36 at the end of the game. According to Richardson, the game went very well.
“First quarter, we started off slow, but we started speeding up in the second half,” Richardson said. “I think overall, we could have played better in the first half, but it was a good finish and we were able to get everyone involved.”
Fritz agreed that the game went well. However, he said the team needs to focus on playing post defense. In the second half, the team came out and demolished BVW once they were able to concentrate on the win, he said.
“The game turned out great,” Fritz said. We had a 35 point win against the team. We have two more games to go in the regular season. We will win the League Championship if we win both of those games. I feel good about it. Winning by 35 points against a hard team is a good accomplishment. I was proud of our guys.”
