BVNW’s chess team took second today with a score of 16.5 behind Rockhurst High School, who won the tournament with a score of 18.

The tournament consisted of five rows of multiple tables pushed together, with board after board of chess games waiting to be played. After the players found their opponent, they shook hands and began their game. Each play lasted a total of 25 minutes.

The members of BVNW’s chess team are Avery Mojica, Zach and Nate Kochuyt, Samuel Long, Edmond Wang, Connor Williams, Steve Gan, Garrett Pieper, John Tran and Grant Martin. Four members medaled: Avery Mojica with 8th place, Garrett Pieper with 13th place, John Tran with 21st place and Grant Martin with 29th place.

Pieper said that his strategy is to use intermediate moves. Intermediate moves can delay another move, but the player can gain his opponent’s piece, or move his piece into the check mate position.

“I win,” Pieper said, when asked why he enjoys chess.

BVNW’s chess team meets every first and third Thursday in Mr. Armenta’s room. The next tournament through Blue Valley will be Jan. 1.
