“Despicable Me 4” is the perfect summer movie. It combines the previous movies in the series all while introducing new characters and plots. In this movie, Gru seeks to defeat a new villain along with his wife Lucy, and kids Margo, Agnes and Edith. These movies were a huge part of my childhood, so having a new movie come out when I’m older was a perfect summer gift.
Gru and his family now have many new things happening in their lives. They have an extra family member – baby Gru – and a new villain threatening their safety. Voiced by Will Ferrel, Maxime Le Mel is the villain of this movie, seeking revenge on Gru due to a childhood grudge. Gru and his family fight to find protection from Maxime, encountering various issues along the way, even causing them to have to move and change their identities. The silly storyline and fun-filled cast had me laughing while watching. This movie has a cute ending as well, with the appearance of many old characters and villains.
“Despicable Me 3” came out seven years ago, so there was a lot of time in between the movies, which for me is what made it bittersweet because of how quickly we grow up. These movies were released throughout the span of my childhood, so having the fourth one come out when I’m now much older made me realize that I’m not a kid anymore.
This movie was very well put together, but I do not think that it can beat the first or second movie in the series because of the iconic villains and plot lines of those previous movies. However, I do think it is better then the third movie because the villain in that movie (Balthazar Bratt) was not as fun to watch as some of the other villains. Despite this, I think this movie still had the Despicable Me magic that makes the movies fun for all ages.
This movie tied everything together and ended the movie in a funny, light-hearted way. I do not think that this is the best Despicable Me movie, however, I think that it is the perfect movie for the time being. It gave me the same feelings as the previous stories- goofy, crazy and fun – while having a different storyline. This movie is not crazy special, but perfect for a summer film.
