Huskies softball swept by Gardner Edgerton on senior night

The varsity softball team was defeated in both game of their senior night doubleheader against Gardner Edgerton Tuesday May 9. BVNW lost the first game 10-3, and the second game 15-6, ending the Huskies regular season record at 4-16.

Head coach Kim White said the team played well at times and were positive, but the team made too many errors early. White said the girls showed what they were capable of at times, the team just needed to put together an entire game of great play.

“We’ve played similar to this several times this season,” White said. “We just can’t get a key hit when we need it. We hit the ball hard tonight but we also left the bases loaded twice. When you leave the bases loaded twice and don’t score there, it’s hard. It’s hard to come back from that.”

White said if the team can put the positive things they did at the end of the game, they could achieve great things. White said she hoped the team was saving their best game for regionals next week.

Senior Reagan Whitworth said the Huskies had a few key hits when they needed, but ultimately failed to come through enough. Whitworth said BVNW has been struggling with execution and trying to work on it, but they did not have a lot of time to practice between playing eight games in a row, and it was shown in the past few games.

“Overall, it’s been a really enjoyable season even though our record’s not reflecting that,” Whitworth said.

White said seniors Kylie Young, Amelia Wyndrum, Reagan Whitworth, Sarah Callahan and Makenzie  Behymer are incredible ladies who have given their heart and soul to the program since they joined. She said the five seniors are five of the finest young people who have been a part of her program.

“They do things the right way, they’re kids that give of themselves,” White said. “A lot of them gave up individual accolades to play a position that helped our team, and it wasn’t always what was best for them. But this group understood what it meant to be selfless and to care more about their teammates than they did themselves.”

Wyndrum said she felt good about leaving and she had a good four years.

“I left it on a good note with some great people,” Wyndrum said. “Obviously, we didn’t have the best season, but winning isn’t really everything to me. I just had a good time with all the girls on the field and that’s really what’s important to me.”

Callahan said it was bittersweet for her knowing tonight was her last night playing at the DAC after playing on varsity for four years.

Even though the team lost both games, it was a special night for senior team members Young, Wyndrum, Whitworth, Callahan and Behymer. White said she hated that their last memory on the home field was a loss, but she hopes they will remember all the fun memories they had, the amazing plays they made, the key hits they had, rather than the outcome of the game.
