The varsity boys basketball game between the Blue Valley Northwest Huskies and the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints started with a quickly established lead by BVNW.

After a personal foul against senior Vince Fritz, the Saints were able to put up a few points on the scoreboard.  However, those would be the majority gained for the Saints in the first eight minutes, and at the conclusion of the first quarter the Huskies still had the lead, 14 to 5.

BVNW steadily increased their lead throughout second quarter with multiple key baskets by seniors Kyle Harrison and Clayton Custer, leaving the score BVNW 36 to STA 17.  During halftime, the cheerleaders performed their Sweetheart routine previously seen at the pup assembly on Feb. 13.

Third quarter brought more personal fouls against the Huskies, but they still remained ahead of the Saints, 60 to 33.  The highlight of the third quarter came from a dunk by senior Ben Richardson with five minutes left. The Huskies were able to rotate more players in and out in the final quarter, and ensured a victory, with the final score of 75 to 41.

As one of the last games of the season, senior Lauren Muth said she enjoys to watch the boys play, especially because it is her last year at BVNW.

“It’s exciting for me to watch the boys at this point during the season because the crowd gets really fired up,” Muth said. “It’s fun for me as a senior; I get to live out the last few months here at BVNW, and I am proud to call it my home.”

Senior David Salach said the game started off pretty well, even though the game began pretty slowly. According to Salach, senior Kyle Harrison played very well and was focused the entire game.  This puts the Huskies in a good position as the state championship nears.

“I hope [for next game] we come out and play the same we did today,” Salach said. “I hope we get another victory so we go into state with a little momentum.”
